For our second SYKY Design Hour, Berlin-based 3D designer and AR creator Harriet Davey hosted a deep-dive and practical tutorial on creating digital environments for fashion using Blender. Missed it? We've got you covered with a quick recap and full recording from the workshop below.

To begin, Davey introduced our audience of 90 designers, all keen to develop their existing 3D design skills, through key techniques for building environments that elevate digital fashion pieces. She emphasized the importance of creating realistic, controlled backgrounds that support a garment’s narrative, rather than just acting as a backdrop, so that audiences can connect and talk about the story beyond the garment itself.

Next came the practical tutorial, with our host demonstrating how to set up an environment using plugins and other tools in real-time. Some of her favorite free plugins got a special mention, including A.N.T. Landscape, an add-on that lets designers create landscape meshes quickly; BlenderKit, a huge asset library that makes adding materials, like water, foliage, ground textures, and more, to objects easy; and Tri-lighting, which allows for auto 3-point lighting set up. Davey wanted all of the attendees to understand the importance of lighting a scene well, demonstrating how lighting positions, camera settings, reflections, and even fog, can totally transform an environment, spotlight fashion pieces, and create an immersive atmosphere.
